Assessment of a Discontinuous Galerkin Method for the Simulation of the Turbulent Flow around the DrivAer Car Model

The turbulent flow over the DrivAer fastback model is here investigated with an order-adaptive discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method. growing need of high-fidelity simulations for accurate determination problems, e.g., vehicle aerodynamics, promoted research on models and methods to improve computational efficiency bring practice Scale Resolving Simulations (SRS), like large-eddy simulation (LES), industrial level. An appealing choice SRS Implicit LES (ILES) via a high-order DG method, where favourable numerical dissipation space discretization scheme plays directly role subgrid-scale model. time integration p-adaptive algorithm reduce cost allowing description physical phenomenon very coarse mesh moderate number degrees freedom. Two different have been considered: (i) simplified model, without rear-view mirrors wheels, smooth underbody; (ii) underbody. predicted results compared experimental data CFD reference results, showing good agreement.
